About legal and compliance jobs
Legal and compliance jobs cover legal advice, contracts, disputes and regulatory compliance: lawyers and legal counsel, paralegals and legal assistants, contract managers, and compliance and risk specialists. In the UAE, legal professionals work in law firms, in-house legal departments of companies and government entities, and in the regulatory functions of large organisations.
The UAE has two legal environments for business: the onshore system based on federal and emirate laws in Arabic, and the common-law financial free zones of DIFC in Dubai and ADGM in Abu Dhabi, which have their own courts and laws in English. Many international law firms have offices in these centres, while local firms handle onshore litigation. Construction, real estate, energy, technology and government entities employ in-house counsel, and compliance teams have grown with anti-money laundering rules, data protection under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, and sector-specific regulation.
Bilingual Arabic and English skills are highly valued, and rights of audience before onshore courts are subject to specific rules on nationality and licensing, so many foreign-qualified lawyers work as legal consultants.
