About the role: Business development
Business development professionals create growth by opening new markets, winning major clients and building partnerships. Compared with a sales executive, the role is more strategic: identifying opportunities, structuring deals and coordinating proposals that can take months to close.
The UAE's position as a regional hub means many business development roles cover the GCC, the Middle East and Africa from offices in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Employers include technology and software companies, engineering and construction firms, logistics providers, consultancies, healthcare and education groups, and free zone authorities that attract companies to set up in the country.
Typical requirements include several years of experience in the same industry, an established network of decision-makers and the ability to prepare tenders and commercial proposals. Government and semi-government clients often buy through formal procurement processes, so tender experience is valued.
Main responsibilities
- Identify new markets, clients and partners
- Build relationships with senior decision-makers
- Prepare proposals, tenders and pricing
- Negotiate contracts and partnership agreements
- Develop market entry and growth plans
Skills employers look for
- Industry network in the UAE and GCC
- Tender and proposal writing
- Commercial and financial acumen
- Presentation and negotiation skills
- Arabic is often an advantage
Applying in the UAE
Highlight deals you have closed, their size and the markets involved. Employers recruiting for regional roles will ask about travel availability and your experience with government or semi-government clients.
