About the role: Procurement and purchasing
Procurement professionals buy the goods and services an organisation needs at the right price, quality and time. The field includes buyers, purchasing officers, sourcing specialists, contracts and tendering officers, and category or procurement managers.
In the UAE, demand comes from construction and infrastructure projects, oil and gas and utilities, government entities, hospitals, hotels, retail groups and manufacturers. Many purchases involve international suppliers, so buyers deal with incoterms, import documentation and lead times as well as price negotiation. Government and semi-government procurement follows formal tender procedures, and large projects add vendor prequalification and contract management.
Employers usually ask for a relevant degree and experience in the same industry, since technical knowledge of the items bought matters, whether steel and MEP materials, medical supplies or food and beverage. A professional qualification such as CIPS is widely recognised and often mentioned in senior listings.
Main responsibilities
- Source and evaluate suppliers and request quotations
- Prepare comparisons and negotiate prices and terms
- Issue purchase orders and follow up deliveries
- Manage tenders, contracts and vendor registration
- Track spend, savings and supplier performance
Skills employers look for
- Negotiation and commercial awareness
- Experience with SAP, Oracle or another ERP
- Knowledge of incoterms and import processes
- Contract and tender management
- Strong Excel and reporting skills
Qualifications
A degree in business, supply chain or engineering is the usual baseline. The CIPS qualifications are well known among UAE employers, and industry-specific experience often weighs as much as the qualification itself.
