About the role: Auditor
Auditors examine whether financial statements are reliable and whether controls and processes work as intended. External auditors give an independent opinion on a company's accounts, while internal auditors review risks, controls and compliance from inside the organisation.
In the UAE, external audit roles are concentrated in audit and accounting firms of all sizes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, where many companies, including free zone entities, must have their accounts audited. Internal audit teams are found in government entities, conglomerates, real estate developers, retailers, airlines, energy and industrial groups.
Audit work is organised around busy seasons that follow year-end, with long hours in the first months of the year for companies with a December year-end. Experience with IFRS, International Standards on Auditing and, for internal audit, risk-based audit methods is expected.
Main responsibilities
- Plan audits and assess risks
- Test transactions, balances and controls
- Review compliance with policies and regulations
- Document findings and recommendations
- Follow up on agreed actions with management
Skills employers look for
- IFRS and International Standards on Auditing
- Internal control frameworks such as COSO
- Data analytics for audit
- Professional scepticism and rigour
- Clear report writing
Qualifications in the UAE
ACCA, CPA or a chartered accountancy qualification is the usual target for external auditors, and the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) is common in internal audit. Starting in an audit firm is a classic route into finance management roles later on.
