About the role: Civil and site engineer
Civil and site engineers design, build and supervise buildings and infrastructure: towers, villas, roads, bridges, utilities, ports and rail. In the UAE the role covers design offices, consultancies supervising works on behalf of clients, and contractors running the job on site.
Construction remains a major employer across the country, driven by real estate developments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, transport and utility networks, and tourism and industrial projects in the other emirates. Site engineers coordinate subcontractors, check work against drawings and specifications, and report on progress; design engineers work on structural analysis and drawings; planning and project engineers manage schedules and cost.
Employers expect an engineering degree, relevant UAE or Gulf experience and familiarity with local authority approvals and standards. Software such as AutoCAD, ETABS, SAP2000, Primavera P6 or MS Project often appears in listings, along with knowledge of FIDIC contracts on larger projects. Site work involves early starts and outdoor conditions, especially during the summer months.
Main responsibilities
- Supervise works on site against drawings and specifications
- Coordinate subcontractors, materials and inspections
- Prepare method statements and progress reports
- Carry out structural design and calculations
- Follow up approvals with consultants and authorities

Qualifications in the UAE
Employers usually require an attested engineering degree for the work visa. Some positions, particularly in consultancies and for signing off designs, require registration with the relevant municipality or engineering authority, and membership of the UAE Society of Engineers is common.
