About the role: Architect and interior designer
Architects and interior designers shape the buildings and spaces of the UAE, from residential communities and towers to hotels, offices, retail and cultural venues. The family also includes BIM modellers, draughtspeople and landscape architects who turn design concepts into coordinated drawings.
Most jobs are with architecture and engineering consultancies, developers' design departments and fit-out or joinery contractors. Interior design is particularly active, given constant hotel, restaurant, retail and office refurbishment. Projects move fast, so studios value people who can produce concept presentations as well as detailed construction drawings.
Portfolios carry a great deal of weight in applications. Listings commonly require Revit and BIM coordination, AutoCAD, and visualisation tools such as SketchUp, 3ds Max, Lumion or the Adobe suite. Knowledge of local building codes, authority submission processes and sustainability requirements like Estidama in Abu Dhabi is an advantage.
Main responsibilities
- Develop concepts and design presentations
- Produce detailed drawings and BIM models
- Coordinate with structural and MEP engineers
- Prepare authority submissions
- Select materials, finishes and furniture for interiors
Skills employers look for
- Revit, AutoCAD and BIM coordination
- SketchUp, 3ds Max, Lumion or similar
- A strong, up-to-date portfolio
- Knowledge of local codes and approvals
- Client communication and presentation skills
Qualifications in the UAE
A degree in architecture or interior design is expected, attested for the work visa. Universities in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi offer architecture and design programmes, and some senior roles require registration with the local authority to sign off submissions.
