About the role: Quantity surveyor
Quantity surveyors manage the cost of construction projects from early estimates to final account. They measure quantities from drawings, prepare bills of quantities and tenders, evaluate variations and claims, and track project costs against budget.
In the UAE, QS roles exist on all sides of a project: with developers and government clients, with cost consultancies, with main contractors and with subcontractors in civil, MEP, fit-out and joinery works. Contractor-side surveyors focus on interim payment applications, subcontractor valuations and variations, while consultants advise clients on budgets, procurement and contract administration.
Employers look for a degree in quantity surveying or civil engineering, solid measurement skills and good knowledge of the contracts used locally, FIDIC forms in particular. Estimating and cost control software, such as CostX, and strong Excel are common requirements. Commercial awareness and clear writing matter when negotiating variations and preparing claims.
