Internship: our advice
An internship gives students and recent graduates practical experience inside an organisation, often as part of a university programme. In the UAE, internships are offered by government entities, energy and utility companies, airlines, hospitality groups, technology firms, consulting firms and many private companies, especially over the summer.
Large employers often run structured summer internships and graduate trainee programmes with application windows that open months in advance, so watch for them early in the academic year. Some programmes are reserved for or prioritise UAE nationals as part of Emiratisation. Employers need the appropriate permit to take on interns, and international students should check the conditions of their visa before accepting an offer.
A good internship has clear objectives, a supervisor and real tasks. Ask about duration, working hours, any allowance and whether the placement can lead to a job. Legitimate employers do not ask candidates to pay for an internship or a work permit.
Tips for applying
- Apply early, especially for summer programmes
- Tailor your CV to the department you target
- Mention projects, clubs and volunteering
- Ask your university careers office for referrals
- Follow up politely after applying
Questions to ask
- What tasks and objectives will I have?
- Who will supervise me?
- Is there an allowance or stipend?
- Does my visa allow this placement?
- Can the internship lead to a graduate role?
