About the role: Electrical engineer
Electrical engineers design, install and maintain power systems, from high-voltage networks and substations to building distribution, lighting and controls. The family also includes instrumentation and control engineers, who work on sensors, PLCs and control systems, and electricians on site.
Power and water utilities, oil and gas operators, renewable and nuclear energy projects, MEP contractors and consultancies, manufacturers and facilities management companies all recruit electrical profiles in the UAE. Solar developments, grid expansion and data centres have added demand for engineers with experience in renewables, protection and automation.
Listings typically ask for experience in a comparable environment, knowledge of IEC standards and local utility regulations, and tools such as ETAP, DIALux or AutoCAD. Instrumentation roles add PLC, DCS and SCADA systems. Electricians are usually expected to have a technical qualification and practical experience in building or industrial installations.
Main responsibilities
- Design or review power and lighting systems
- Supervise installation, testing and commissioning
- Maintain substations, switchgear and motors
- Configure and troubleshoot control systems
- Ensure compliance with standards and safety rules
Skills employers look for
- Electrical or instrumentation engineering degree
- Knowledge of IEC standards and utility regulations
- ETAP, DIALux, AutoCAD
- PLC, DCS and SCADA for control roles
- Electrical safety and permit-to-work practice
Qualifications in the UAE
An attested degree or diploma is normally required. Experience with the approvals of local electricity authorities is valued for building projects, and specific authorisations may be needed to work on utility networks.
