About the role: Mechanical engineer
Mechanical engineers design, install, operate and maintain machines and mechanical systems: pumps, compressors, turbines, piping, heating and cooling plant, vehicles and production lines. The family also includes mechanical technicians and mechanics working in workshops and plants.
In the UAE, the largest employers are oil, gas and petrochemical operators and their contractors, power and water utilities, district cooling providers, manufacturers in industrial zones such as Mussafah, Jebel Ali and Sharjah, and facilities management companies. Automotive dealers and fleet operators recruit mechanics and service advisers, while aviation and marine companies need specialised maintenance engineers.
Employers usually ask for experience in the same type of plant or equipment, knowledge of relevant codes such as ASME and API, and computerised maintenance systems such as SAP PM or Maximo. Design roles add AutoCAD, SolidWorks or piping software. Plant and field roles may involve shifts, rotations and outdoor work.
Main responsibilities
- Design or review mechanical systems and equipment
- Plan and supervise installation and maintenance
- Troubleshoot failures and analyse root causes
- Improve reliability and equipment performance
- Prepare technical specifications and reports
Skills employers look for
- Mechanical engineering degree or diploma
- Knowledge of ASME, API and related codes
- SAP PM, Maximo or another CMMS
- AutoCAD, SolidWorks or piping design tools
- Safety awareness and permit-to-work experience
Qualifications in the UAE
Engineering positions normally require an attested degree for the work visa. Membership of the UAE Society of Engineers and safety training such as NEBOSH or IOSH can strengthen an application for plant and project roles.
