About the role: Cyber security
Cyber security professionals protect organisations' systems, networks and data against attacks, fraud and leaks. The field covers defensive operations in a security operations centre (SOC), security engineering and architecture, penetration testing, incident response and governance, risk and compliance (GRC).
The UAE has made cyber security a national priority, with the UAE Cyber Security Council coordinating national policy and, in Dubai, the Dubai Electronic Security Center setting standards for government entities. Government bodies, critical infrastructure such as energy, utilities, aviation and telecoms, healthcare providers, consultancies and managed security service providers all recruit.
Many roles in government and critical infrastructure require security clearance or are open only to UAE nationals, so check eligibility before applying. Elsewhere, employers look for hands-on experience with security tools and recognised certifications, and the most senior posts call for knowledge of local regulations and international frameworks such as ISO 27001 and NIST.
Main responsibilities
- Monitor alerts and investigate incidents in a SOC
- Run vulnerability assessments and penetration tests
- Design and harden network, cloud and identity security
- Write policies and run risk and compliance assessments
- Train staff on security awareness
Skills employers look for
- SIEM, EDR and firewall technologies
- Cloud security on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud
- ISO 27001, NIST and local information assurance standards
- Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, OSCP or CEH
- Clear incident reporting in English, Arabic a plus
Career path
A common route starts as a SOC analyst or IT administrator, then moves into incident response, engineering or GRC. Certifications help, but employers also value lab work, capture-the-flag results and documented incident experience.
