About the role: Software developer
Software developers design, build and maintain the applications that companies and public services run on, from customer-facing web and mobile apps to internal enterprise systems. In the UAE the title covers a wide range of roles: software engineer, back-end or mobile developer, technical lead and solutions engineer.
Demand comes from technology companies and start-ups clustered in Dubai Internet City, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Abu Dhabi's Hub71, from telecoms operators, airlines, retailers, logistics groups and from government entities that run large digital service programmes. Many teams work in English with colleagues from dozens of countries, and agile delivery with Scrum or Kanban is the norm.
Employers typically ask for solid experience in one main stack, such as Java, C#/.NET, Python, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Kotlin or Swift, along with cloud services, APIs and automated testing. Some government and public-sector projects require security vetting or prefer UAE nationals, so read the eligibility section of each listing carefully.
Main responsibilities
- Design and develop features, services and APIs
- Write unit and integration tests and review colleagues' code
- Maintain and improve existing applications
- Work with product owners, designers and QA in agile sprints
- Deploy through CI/CD pipelines and monitor production
Skills employers look for
- Strong command of at least one language and framework
- Relational and NoSQL databases
- REST or GraphQL APIs and microservices
- Git, Docker and a major cloud platform (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud)
- Clear written and spoken English
Applying in the UAE
A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is usually expected, and degree certificates are often attested for the work permit. A public GitHub profile or portfolio and concrete examples of systems you have shipped carry more weight than a long list of technologies.
