About the role: Data analyst
Data analysts turn raw data into reports, dashboards and insights that help managers make decisions. They collect and clean data, build queries and visualisations, and explain what the numbers mean to colleagues who are not data specialists.
In the UAE, analysts work in retail and e-commerce, airlines and travel, telecoms, real estate, logistics, healthcare and government entities, many of which publish performance targets and service indicators. Business intelligence teams often sit within finance, operations or a central data office, and the job may be titled BI analyst, reporting analyst or business analyst.
SQL is the core requirement, together with Excel and a visualisation tool such as Power BI or Tableau. Python or R is increasingly expected for more advanced analysis. Strong communication matters as much as technique: employers look for analysts who can present findings clearly to senior stakeholders.
Main responsibilities
- Extract, clean and combine data from several systems
- Build dashboards and recurring reports
- Track KPIs and explain variances
- Answer ad hoc business questions with data
- Document data definitions and quality issues
Skills employers look for
- Advanced SQL
- Power BI, Tableau or Qlik
- Advanced Excel
- Python or R for analysis
- Data storytelling and presentation skills
Data protection
Analysts handling personal data must respect the UAE's Personal Data Protection Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021), and companies in DIFC or ADGM follow their own data protection rules. Familiarity with anonymisation and access controls is a plus.
