About the role: Network and telecoms engineer
Network and telecoms engineers design, build and maintain the networks that carry voice and data, from office LANs and Wi-Fi to data centres, fibre and mobile networks. Their work ensures connections are fast, available and secure.
In the UAE, the telecoms operators e& and du, along with their equipment vendors and subcontractors, recruit for mobile, 5G, RF, transmission and fibre roles. Enterprise network engineers are hired by system integrators, data centre operators, airports, hotels, hospitals, universities, government entities and large construction projects that need structured cabling and low-current systems.
Employers look for vendor knowledge, especially Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, Palo Alto, Huawei, Nokia or Ericsson depending on the role, and experience with routing, switching and network security. Field roles involve site visits across the emirates, so a UAE driving licence is often requested.
Main responsibilities
- Design and configure routers, switches and firewalls
- Plan, optimise and troubleshoot mobile or RF networks
- Deploy and test fibre and transmission links
- Monitor network performance and resolve outages
- Document network designs and changes
Skills employers look for
- Routing and switching (BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLANs)
- Network security and SD-WAN
- Wireless, RF or 4G/5G radio technologies
- Cisco, Juniper or Fortinet certifications
- Scripting and network automation
Qualifications in the UAE
Most roles ask for a bachelor's degree in electrical, electronics or telecommunications engineering or in computer science. Vendor certifications such as CCNA, CCNP or CCIE are frequently listed and help candidates moving between employers.
